Putting Out Fires
A man drove home from a stressful
Day of work. His thoughts were of
Relaxing in his home. Maybe one of
His favorite television shows would
Be on tonight, or just a recline
On his sofa with some music
Playing, and a bottle of wine.
That’s it!
But what was this? As he turned
Onto his street, he saw fire
Engines and flames. It was his
House aflame.
One really could not say the thoughts
Going through his mind as he
Watched all he had worked and
Saved for, burning away.
Many hours later, the blaze was out.
Just smoke drifted up from
Patches of debris. As he walked
Through the ghostly scene,
Tears rolled down his face, and eventually
An odd smile broke through.
An uncontrollable laugh overtook him.
In the audience of puzzled onlookers,
These words he began to shout.
“I am free, I am finally free!!”
The Coffee Buzz
Today, in a busy coffee shop,
Within this inner city –
I looked up from my book,
To witness a brilliant sight. –
A man sitting outside with his
New baby girl. –
He had pushed her in a stroller
To this place in front of many –
The father’s joy beamed,
And baby looked around smiling
With big brown eyes alit,
As her bushy brown hair stood on end.
Each of us nearby were drawn,
With smiles and gestures,
They took our attention,
And drew us closer yet,
Even though we had not physically moved.
That dad did not know he had many
Of these strangers caught up in their world.
As we had been in ours until,
We shared this moment together.
As he walked away with the beautiful child,
Everything returned to its previous beat.
The thought that there are these moments,
For all to share, –
Will always bring hope for the future.
And although there are many shadows,
In this life,
I remember to look up at times,
To catch the light.
